Reception

In Reception we pride ourselves on providing children with high quality teaching and rich play opportunities through continuous provision both inside and out.

We have a broad and ambitious curriculum that is tailored to the interests and needs of the children.

Culture and diversity are celebrated through our inclusive practices, quality literature and real-life experiences.

Children in Reception are provided with valuable opportunities to support and promote learning as well as developing important life skills.

Teachers and staff work hard to build positive relationships with children and families from their first interactions to ensure smooth transitions and respectful working partnerships.

Please find below a guidance document to your child’s learning and development in the early years foundation stage.

Assessment
Autumn Term: Reception Baseline Assessment
The Reception Baseline Assessment became statutory in schools in September 2021.
It is an activity-based assessment of pupils’ starting points in:
  • language, communication and literacy
  • mathematics
The assessment is a short, task-based assessment. It is not used to label or track individual pupils.
Schools are required to carry out the assessment within the first 6 weeks of pupils starting reception. No numerical score is shared, and the data will only be used at the end of year 6 to form the school-level progress measure. However, teachers will receive a series of short, narrative statements that tell them how their pupils performed in the assessment. These can be used to inform teaching within the first term.
It is not about judging or labelling your child or putting them under any pressure. Your child cannot ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ the assessment. Its main purpose is to create a starting point to measure the progress schools make with their pupils.
Your child is unlikely to even know that they are taking part in an assessment when they are completing the tasks.
The assessment will create school-level progress measures for primary schools which show the progress pupils make from reception until the end of key stage 2 (KS2).
These measures will then be published for all-through primaries in the summer of 2028 for the first time. This will be when those pupils who entered reception in the academic year 2021 to 2022 reach the end of KS2.

Summer: Good Level of Development
GLD stands for 'Good Level of Development'.
This refers to a summative assessment judgement which is made for each EYFS child at the end of the Reception year. It is a measure of attainment, not progress.  Achieving a good level of development will also help a child to make a good start in Year 1.
At the end of their Reception year children will be evaluated on their learning outcomes in relation to the seven ‘Early Learning Goals’ (ELG).
They are:
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
  • Literacy
  • Maths
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design
You will receive a written report about your child’s outcomes at the end of the year.
