Welcome to Glennie and Da Vinci Classes

Welcome to Year 1

Classes

There are two classes in year 1.

  • Da Vinci. This class is named after the artist Leonardo Da Vinci. The teacher for Da Vinci class is Mrs O’Hagan
  • This class is named after the percussionist Evelyn Glennie. The teacher for Glennie class is Miss Simons.

Arriving at school and collecting from school

Children in year 1 must be brought to their classroom door in the morning and collected from their classroom door after school by an adult.  Our gates open at 8:40am in the morning and school finishes at 3:15pm.  Children in Year 1 cannot use the gate next to the school car park.

Uniform

Our school uniform is:

  • Royal blue jumper/cardigan
  • Charcoal grey trousers/skirt/pinafore
  • Black shoes or trainers with Velcro fastenings (shoes with laces should only be worn where children can tie their own laces)
  • White polo shirts
  • Blue checked dress/grey shorts optional in warmer weather
  • Book Bag

Our PE kit is:

  • Black shorts
  • White t-shirt
  • Plain black tracksuit or black leggings.

School uniform can be bought in many different shops and supermarkets.  If you wish to buy embroidered items, then these can be bought online: online Lings School Uniform.

Families who are eligible for Pupil Premium funding can receive support with buying school uniform – please contact the school office for more information.

PE

Children should come to school in their PE kit on PE days.  Year 1 classes have PE on Wednesday and Thursday.

What should my child bring?

In Year 1, children need the following things every day:

  • Water bottle
  • Waterproof coat
  • Reading book
  • Reading Record

Stay and Read

We love reading at Lings Primary!  We have ‘Stay and Read’ sessions for parents every Friday morning from 8:40-8:50am, where parents can come into the classroom with their child to share a book.

Phonics

Year 1 children learn phonics to support them in learning to read.  In June 2025, all year 1 children take the phonics screening check.  We will give you more information about this once the children have settled into year 1.

Attendance

It is really important that our year 1 children come to school every day, unless they are unwell.  When children have days off school it means they miss learning and they miss spending time with their friends and building connections too.  Each school day presents a chance to learn something new, spark curiosity and build skills that will shape your child’s future.

Safeguarding, Inclusion and Family Support

We have a team of staff dedicated to safeguarding, inclusion and family support.  The team work together with families and children to overcome barriers and work through problems to make sure that our children feel happy and safe.  You will see the team out on the playground before and after school every day.

Thank you for your support in making next year a really positive one.  We look forward to working in partnership with you.
